The Importance of Knowing and Practicing Diplomacy

As we move forward in our careers and in our lives, we come to realize how important diplomacy truly is. Understanding the needs, concerns, and expectations of our neighbors is not only important but crucial for any nation seeking peace, stability, and prosperity.
Mexico and the United States have been strategic partners in trade and economic development for decades. Beyond their economic relationship, however, they have also demonstrated the importance of being good neighbors and maintaining strong diplomatic ties. These relationships help us understand why cooperation and mutual respect are essential to the well-being of both nations.
Failing to recognize the importance of these relationships can create challenges and, in some circumstances, threaten the economic and social future of both countries and their allies. One of the best ways to understand this relationship is to recognize the history and importance of our shared region.
The border between Mexico and the United States serves as a daily reminder of what unites us rather than what divides us. The Río Bravo, or Rio Grande as it is known in the United States, connects two nations that, throughout the decades, have demonstrated maturity in diplomacy, leadership, and cooperation across political, economic, and social spheres.
Supporting one another when needed, recognizing shared interests, and addressing concerns through dialogue are practices that strengthen our communities and our nations. However, these principles can be weakened when important issues are ignored or left unaddressed.
That is why we call upon our public servants, social leaders, community members, economists, diplomats, and citizens to stand together against discrimination and oppression. We must continue to support common-sense principles that promote respect, integrity, cooperation, and the betterment of our shared interests.
At the end of the day, we know that we can count on one another to move forward. Mexico and the United States have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to continue building a relationship based on mutual respect, understanding, cooperation, and good diplomacy.
When two nations work together, both can thrive.
